I think it was the Riftwar series or maybe Wheel of Time they described battlefield magic as difficult and easily negated during battle conditions(too much spells and counter spells, cancling each other out). Meanwhile idiots can squeeze a trigger
That's not at all applicable here. Styx wasn't in a battle with hundreds of other spellcasters, he's some pagan dork having a relationship dispute.
