What's not funny is how they "woke" Sesame Street many years ago! Oscar's into recycling now! Cookie Monster eats veggies! They're trying to make Ernie & Bert into a gay couple (they're brothers, sheesh!). & etc.

I don't know why, but them being brothers never consciously occurred to me. Makes absolute sense.
I don't think it's ever been explicitly stated, but I always pictured them as college roommates, but maybe having them be stepbrothers works better.
The idea was always to have two conflicting personalities forced together to become friends, any relationship details were secondary.
