Deliberately setting a fire and calling 911 but not turning yourself in is like driving drunk, causing a crash, calling 911 but driving away. Or beating someone half to death, calling 911 and fleeing but your victim still dies.
This wasn't an accident. If he turned himself in and remained at the scene of the crime and did everything he could to avert disaster, sure, he would deserve some leniency for that.
In the end it didn't matter that he called 911. Perhaps the death penalty might be a bit extreme in his case but this is a crime you'll have to atone for the rest of your life.
It's not extreme. People died. You deserve death for killing other people unless it was self defense or the most innocent of accidents.
