I came across an article where the lady who is in charge of the upcoming Supergirl movie said that the character is "too optimistic" and she wants something dark and gritty. I know it is beating a dead horse to ask "Then why don't you make your own stuff if you don't care to research and respect the source material", but this is just a small symptom of a massive problem.
I remember a normie friend calling me a nerdy snob because I refused to watch the Obi-Wan show due to the showrunner saying it was a priority to have Leia in it along with other stuff (I had already cancelled Disney) or I was told I was making a mountain out of a mole hill when I thought it was dumb in the 3rd season of Stranger Things to set up that guy and girl in the ice cream store to be a couple only for her to say she is a lesbian.
Like I said, this is all a symptom of a bigger issue but I do think it is a little sad that this is what I come to expect. Dark and gritty can be good every now and then, but would it kill modern entertainment to make something uplifting and hopeful? I know it may be sappy but I still enjoy watching old episodes of Leave it to Beaver or Little House and seeing the family unit celebrated.
Is it 2005 again already? DC literally just moved away from almost 20 years of that starting with Batman Begins way back in 2005, which ironically hamstringed DC for years while the Nolan trilogy was being finished because DC didn't want Bale's Batman to be the one in planned Justice League material. So while they were still finishing that Marvel was printing money with Phase 1 of the MCU and DC would never catch up to them. Even when DC continued the dark and gritty route with Man of Steel, and eventually finished up with Justice League and giving fans what they wanted with the Snyder cut, the execs already wanted to reboot the trinity yet again because none of them have any idea what they are doing so they flip flop between thr same failed ideas or try to copy others who managed to capture lightning in a bottle by being first.
Dark and gritty or deconstructed characters can work once every now and then but they love to do this and it’s been done to death. I’ve read The Boys comic and Watchmen which I enjoyed but haven’t seen the show or watchmen show. Just the movie. I’m so tired of deconstruction. At this point I want to see a brave knight save the princess
You mean 1985? The "Dark and Gritty" age goes back as early as "The Killing Joke".
They've literally never moved on.
Optimism is counter-cultural.
Dark and gritty can work when it’s not done to death. I enjoy some dark and gritty stories
It's also good when it's done intelligently, but all of these things are well outside the competency of most comic book writers.
Going to want a source on this. As far as I could tell, it was always Nolan's intention for the Dark Knight trilogy to be self-contained in its own world, hence why there are no fantastical elements such as superpowers. And to be honest, regardless of what they wanted, it was the wrong move.
After TDK, they should have told Nolan that what Marvel was doing would be the future of the film industry and that he'd get to make the third part of his trilogy if he played ball and got Bale to agree to ~10 appearances in Justice League themed movies, pairing him up with Brandon Routh's Superman.
Movies used to be so good that a movie at the quality level of Superman Returns could be considered bad.
Bale mentioned in an interview that DC did not contact him for BvS, and he was a bit miffed about it.
So I can't imagine they had plans to use Bale if they didn't contact him about it.
