Nephew picked this up and I had to watch him endure it. They sweet baby'd the fuck out of this game.
Main character Atsu is a total Mary Sue who starts the game being the best at everything. She's already known as the Onryo, everyone is afraid of her, she already has all the tools Jin had to earn and she's a master at everything and a savant when learning anything new. She roams the countryside being a professional bitch, judging everyone and every action, being as toxic as possible. Almost every mission ends with a "then everybody clapped" moment.
Men are 100% helpless or evil. The few who can teach her new weapons are stuck behind excuses as to why they won't help in the war. The ones calling for resistance are ALL women. The only ones Atsu respects are other, usually older women with her same stubborn demeanor. She never changes or learns. There is no character development involved. Earning a new weapon involves a 20 minute crash course and ends with weapon masters praising her natural talent and acknowledging her as an equal.
She even meets her brother, who she believed was killed, and immediately treats him like shit. That's another thing - this game postulates that even the samurai are bad because aside from being inept against the warlord, they're just there to oppress the population and just a trade from one tyrant to another.
Did you know Japan had indigenous people who were there before the Japanese? This game embraces their presence. Otherwise where the first game was a love letter to Japanese culture, this game feels like an indictment of it. Evil wars, petty squabbles, crooked men and unsatisfied women abound.
It's a shame because the gameplay itself is quite good. The new weapons work well and combat is satisfying. It's just that everything else this game expects you to swallow is just complete feminism manure.
Feminist girl boss protagonists represent stolen valor. In real life, virtually all women run from war and combat, and this is in the modern age when guns have greatly leveled the playing field. In an age where combat is almost entirely defined by physical strength and speed, female combatants were unheard of.
Oh, except Atsu is unafraid. She charges gunners and cannons regularly. In one instance, she gets her brother to join her (even though he protests out of common sense) and of course they end up fine.
He then admits she was right to try it and should have been brave enough to try it himself. It's absurd. Whoever wrote this was fresh off a reddit rant.
In one mission, she talks him into posing as a captured prisoner so she can turn him in and get close to a general they want dead. This goes poorly and her brother get the shit beat out of him. Then she tells him it's his own fault for being weak by following samurai code. He then agrees with her but still goes back to them. She treats everyone like garbage.

No, no, he's right. A person this insufferable should be encouraged to charge into gun and cannon fire.
