China's got its own film industry now. Since 2020, 80% of their box office is Chinese-made films. It's also at the overall lowest point performance now since 2015, down 34% in the last 6 years.
Anyone still using that excuse for censoring films just wants to censor the film.
I was more thinking of the gaming side, where its a consistent issue in online games that they limit options because they know X and Y won't pass the China barrier and they lazily just cut it entirely.
The movie censorship is really just on principle, since that always just ends up being them cutting niggers and queers from the film as much as possible. So it makes it better honestly as a product.
Fair. But given the success of Wukong, we might not be that far away from having it happen with games too. They've certainly made strides in mobile, even internationally.
At some point, Chinese audiences aren't going to want the Western slop, censored or otherwise, and "how will this be received in China," won't be a real consideration for Western companies.
The best they'll be able to hope for in the future is a Marvel Rivals situation, where they make some money for a property while China does the development.
