This was unavoidable given his history. There's no way a conviction would stand without the insanity issue being litigated. It would be malpractice for a defense attorney not to push this angle. From what I can see they're sending him to a secure psychiatric facility for evaluation, not letting him back out in public. I share people's mistrust of the system but I haven't seen anything that's off just yet.
There's been several cases in the UK where rapists were declared unfit to stand trial, sent to a psychiatric hospital, then allowed to basically be sent home and monitored by care-givers.
Instead they were never really mentally ill, they were being monitored by their brother abdullah, and then both raped/killed another kid. That kind of thing happened. So, it is happening in the UK, but it hasn't happened here yet.
I'm not saying that isn't a possibility here, just that I haven't seen any evidence of it happening in this particular case so far. I do know judges have the ability to lock people up in mental institutions for years/decades/indefinitely if they find a suspect unfit to stand trial or a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict is returned. But if this guy is a Democrat as the tweet is claiming (I haven't checked to confirm) then yeah we may very well be fucked. I just don't think we can draw that conclusion based on the evidence we have so far.

I mean, in the US, they just let them free whenever they don’t have capacity anymore, so about a month at most after being admitted.
