Yes, we're so conditioned to be weak little eunuchs that people lash out when they hear me say that criminals should be made to suffer. But think about it for 10 seconds and the point is obvious. Punishment is suffering intentionally inflicted on the wrongdoer. That's literally the definition of it. We even apply this to a much less severe degree to our children. The whole reason why it's a punishment to take away your son's video game system or whatever is that it causes him a degree of suffering. If it didn't, it wouldn't be a punishment. Minor infractions call for minor suffering. Very serious infractions (like murdering a woman on the train) call for very severe suffering.
