Man i remember one guy just arguing with me that japanese cops routinely beat up criminals to get them to confess. Based off two cases over twenty years.
By that way that guy was also accused of a crime before so he has some stake in cops treating criminals nicely

Earlier today, I saw a video of a Japanese market in the 1930s.
It was the definition of a high-trust society.
