I've heard many such stories, though the "to prove that it's so tolerant" aspect is probably embellished. But of course, bike riding in Pakistan (not the Middle East) is about the dumbest thing you can do. Your family and friends would probably stage an intervention. Very different from a safari which is normal.

If only Europeans were still such risk-takers, we'd be in a less appallingly bad state!
