Jesus, that sounds like some kind of Satanic Panic shit. Of course recently I’ve become more open to the idea that the Satanic Panic was real so maybe this is legit too.
I really do wonder some days if censorship is a coordinated effort to not just repress the public but gaslight them into thinking they either 'solved' the issue or 'it was overblown' so the REAL monsters can operate..
I mean, we literally saw that playbook happen in real time with Pizzagate.
It happened so perfectly that it was obviously not the first time they used that methodology, it was a practiced system and because of such they were able to literally skirt by with zero consequences beyond a broken computer and needing a new building.
Satanic Panic was shit but it helped keep D&D based through the late 2nd edition era and 3rd edition. We got articles like "Does God Cry When You Play Dungeons & Dragons?" and reminders in books and internet pages to separate fantasy from reality and that what happens in game stays in game.
As memories of the Satanic Panic faded, so too did the articles and reminders.
And now we have troons infesting D&D demanding representation in their fantasy game. The End.

The media just aimed it at others so we didn't know who was actually doing it. Nerds were a major target for both.
