This has been the case for years now, but it still boggles my mind. Gaming is an overwhelmingly male hobby. 90% of the people playing enthusiast level video games are male. Yet the clear majority of protagonists in these products are female.
New resident evil? Female protagonist.
New Ghost of Tsushima? Female protagonist.
New Hollow Knight? Female protagonist.
New Silent Hill? Female protagonist.
New World of Warcraft expansion? Female protagonist.
And that’s just the biggest trailers of the night. Gay ass indie is almost entirely female (or queer coded) characters.
Is there another industry that hates its own core customer base this much?
This has been the case for pretty much every expansion since MOP.
WOD: Yrel who takes over from Velen, Maraad, and gets both their loot when they die saving her ass.
Legion: Tyrande, Sylvanas, the moose-cows, Thalyssra, Valeria
BFA: Jaina, the troll princess that enacts a coup against her father resulting in him dying and her becoming the new queen - but it was totally an unforseen consequence guys, how was she to know officially declaring and allying with The Horde would invite The Alliance to then attack the troll capital? 🙄
SL: Tyrande and Sylvanas, again, he troon arbiter, The Winter Queen, Thrakka.
DF: Alexstrasza, Vyranoth, Tyrande again, Melithra, Ysera, Kalecgos [not actually female but close enough with how he's written now], Chromie, again and again and again and again and again. The last chapter of the game literally ends with Alexstrasza, Ysera, Melithra, and Vyranoth all leading a war council against the last bad guys and they talk and talk and talk and talk about what needs done, which the player does ofc, and then finally enter the fight, after the player has done all the heavy lifting. Oh, and Wrathion is also standing there.
So this is unfortunately neither something new, nor something ever done well because the writers are shit, just a different kind of shit than Danuser who was so quietly fired it took someone noticing his LinkedIn page to realise he was gone.
Current expansion was the same. Here's a 1 eyed, 1 armed grrlboss who is better-er than Anduin with The Light and will teach him how to use it again after he was mind raped lol and forced to attack his friends and family while under the control of The Jailer - who was totally one of the biggest baddest big bads ever guys, trust us. Look at all these retcons showing it was really him all along and ignore the fact he's already dead because Blizz is that shit at pacing.
