The jewish zionists I can at least understand, and wish my own people would have that level of zealous self-interest. What I really hate are the Christian zionists, how they swear fealty to a group who openly despises and works to undermine them at every opportunity. They'll sell out their kin in service to some insane apocalyptic prophecy that places then sovereignty of israel as the linchpin to the end of the world, and by consequence their ascension to heaven.

Just because dispensationalism got popular in America since WWII, doesn't mean that all of Western Christendom was always wrong since forever. Even American Christians from the 1800s would be appalled at the heresy their descendants have gotten into.
