The first world refers to NATO and their allies. The second world refers to the Warsaw Pact and their allies. The third world refers to neutral countries
So the PRC was the First World after Nixon went to China?

Nope it was second world
Agreed, but it was an American ally and an enemy to the Warsaw Pact. So that division has some issues.
First World: developed capitalist countries.
Second World: communist countries.
Third World: undeveloped countries.
Ally might be a bit of an overstatement for more normalized relations.
