Way back when, the German Mennonites fled persecution and Tsarist Russia invited them to come on over! This greatly benefitted Russia (Ukraine).
Later they fled Russian persecution too & came to Canada by invitation. Canada and the USA prospered wherever Mennonites settled.
Then came the Holodomor... and the USSR never really recovered from that. Ofc WW2 also happened soon after...
