And then agriculture and civilization was invented. If you want civilization, you have to punish adultery harshly. You also have to make sure the average man has investment into maintaining that civilization. If that man does not have offspring, then what reason does he have to maintain civilization?
That's what these discussions always forget. Men aren't just machines that exist without emotion or motivation. Without any hope of improving their lot, most of them will either kill themselves, turn to hedonism or turn to burning it down. They have nothing to lose at that point.
So either he becomes violent and destroys things, or just grabs and takes the women any chance he can regardless of being allowed, like so many other apes do. Sure he might die for it, but he might also have filled his biological imperative and that's stronger than any fear for many.
That's basically where I'm at in life. I've been denied reproduction and a life worth living so why should I uphold the society that has stolen all of this from me?
