That might be a side effect of feminism and the myth of progress. If someone drinks the progressive flavor-aid and genuinely believes that their ancestors were a bunch of ignorant, backwards, sexist barbarians, then it isn't a very big leap to think something else built all the great wonders.
It's worse because it's part of a race and gender war, whereas ancient aliens is just a curiosity.
