If they had done this with 4, I would have been on board. Might have even pulled it off at 5, if 4 was a transition film. Now, it's way too little, way too late.
Well they tried but no one liked Shia Labeouf as Mutt -- not even Harrison Ford.
What's odd is that the buddy-up they should have done for that one was Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett, as Josh would have been a perfect protege and looked like the kind of guy who could be a pulp adventurer. He's tall, has the look, and carries a bit of that classic Hollywood charm about him.
But going with Mutt and then killing him off off-screen in the fifth movie was the most "modern audience" writing for a Hollywood franchise.
Unfortunately they did not get along... and it even held up production at one point. They eventually got through it, though.
You can check out some interviews of Hartnett and Ford (I don't think they did any together?) Ford had nothing good to say about Hartnett in the same way he had nothing good to say about Shia (ouch).
But I think they still would have worked quite well together on an Indy film. Despite their behind-the-scenes issues, Ford and Hartnett had good chemistry on-film in Hollywood Homicide.

I agree 4 felt like a bad movie and felt like a middle finger to the Fandom
