Are you unaware of the fact that ISIS, and most (all?) of the Syrian "rebels" who were fighting against Assad were created, manned, funded, armed, and trained by Western powers through the CIA and Mossad? We were absolutely involved in ousting Assad, and were involved for years.
If we were involved, with manpower, training, arming, and funds, via proxies, then we were involved in a full on war. It doesn't matter if it was unofficial or via clandestine organizations.
It didn't involve a full scale American invasion, which was the only upside to it.
