I would say the difference there is that our commitment there began under Obama and so it was a preexisting war that he had to finish up. This time he is the one starting shit. That's what makes this such a problem.
Are you unaware of the fact that ISIS, and most (all?) of the Syrian "rebels" who were fighting against Assad were created, manned, funded, armed, and trained by Western powers through the CIA and Mossad? We were absolutely involved in ousting Assad, and were involved for years.
He did that his previous term too, but America didn't get pulled into playing in the sandbox then either.
