It wouldn't just one more step. Direct military intervention could not just be a catalyst for a full blown regional or even global war but Iran could decide to go scorched earth and kill the world economy. Obviously it all depends on the actual capabilities of Iran but we're seeing in Israel how difficult it is to defend yourself against mass missile attacks despite getting help from multiple countries shooting down missiles.
The US is already involved in the war, just one step more indirectly.
Ted Cruz was right when he said "we" were involved. I'm just hoping we don't get further involved...and actually get significantly less involved.
