It wouldn't just one more step. Direct military intervention could not just be a catalyst for a full blown regional or even global war but Iran could decide to go scorched earth and kill the world economy. Obviously it all depends on the actual capabilities of Iran but we're seeing in Israel how difficult it is to defend yourself against mass missile attacks despite getting help from multiple countries shooting down missiles.
