Keep in mind we would need a successful USS Liberty false flag to pull us into the war. Iran themselves have no reason to attack the US, and reportedly are taking pains not to. The rhetoric is necessary to keep up appearances in the dog-eat-dog environment of the Middle East.
I don't know why you think a false flag is necessary. Trump could easily just conduct air-strikes without any additional justification, and even without a false flag, Iran could very easily fire it's hypersonic missiles against our carriers or bases.
I mean, hell, If we're defending Israel, and supplying fuel to air-striking air-craft, I can easily see Iran shooting down a refueling plane, and claiming it was justifiable. There's so many targets of opportunity that a false flag isn't necessary.
