I haven't ever attempted big brother(a couple guys I knew from the service did though), although I've done a fair amount of designated driver volunteering in the past.
Its pretty fulfilling. Usually you'll end with up a kid who literally worships you as some idol, since their own father is usually incredibly lacking (which is why they end up there), so you are motivated to be the best version of yourself to be a good example for them.
While obviously just having a kid of your own is the best version of that for everyone, trying to improve your local community one life at a time still brings its own benefits.
That's the reason I'm also "off and on." I did it during the calmer years of my first two, and now with three I'm mostly off there myself. But I can see myself going back once my last one is in her teens and time is open again.
At least a few of the guys I met doing it were empty nesters in their 50s.

Should have clarified lol. I never tried big brother before I had four going on five children.
