Adam Sanchez remembers tears streaming down a student's face as his high school class left the lower level of the National African American Museum of History and Culture a few years ago.
That never happened. High school students don't get emotional over shit they see in a museum. Most of them are going to be bored out of their minds and barely paying attention to what they're seeing and are only attending because their school is forcing them to. You could stick a whole bunch of blacks in a museum devoted entirely to basketball and gangsta rap, and even most of them wouldn't care about it.
The museum, which hosted 1.6 million visitors in 2024, serves as a cornerstone in the preservation of African American history, a number of community leaders and organizations said in its defense.
Now, I'm not gonna pretend to know what the average yearly traffic in a museum is, especially a Smithsonian one, but I can't help but think that's an awfully small number for something under a prestigious name.
1.6 million in a year equals out to approximately 4383 people a day, assuming it's open every day of the year.
It's easy to hit that number if you're sending classes through it who didn't care about going, I'd bet the number of people who wanted to be there are easily half that, if not less.
