But it shouldn't be surprising. Hatred for a rival nation is part of nationalism.
Where the left fucks it all up is it the other part of nationalism is a sense of pride and superiority about your own country. I'm not sure "Russia is evil, just a different kind of evil and a worse evil than our own historically evil United States" is the rallying cry they think it is.
They're not nationalists, though, and they don't hate Russia because they're a rival.
Heck, they have sympathy for all the US's other rivals, pretty much. And I don't even fault them for that, as such, as I personally would like friendlier relations with everyone, including our rivals, as that is preferable to war.
They can justify all sorts of terrible things - as an example, although the 'Hamas supporter' label is way overused, there are legitimate Hamas supporters - but then they hate Russia for an action that most other countries also engage in, to one degree or another.
They hate Russia more for having what should have been a brief war on their own boarder, then they hate the US for fucking up the Middle East for decades and decades. Or even more than Israel. Their hatred of Russia is not rational, is my point. By their own arguments, they should hate Israel more; "genocide" seems a lot worse than "imperialism," but somehow their trained hatred of Russia still manages to overtake the Israel stuff in sheer 'frothing at the mouth' hatred. And then they just start babbling about Ukrainian Democracy and Sovereignty and shit.
