Because all the kids who are on track to be college sports stars had parents who pushed them from an early age to focus heavily on a sports career and quite frankly you're already a retarded parent if you do that.
The odds of success are way too low, and for football especially, the costs are way too high. It's like instead of putting money in savings for your kids you spent it all on lottery tickets. The only ones who don't seem stupid for doing that are ex-athletes themselves, because they can tell what is needed to succeed and their kids have a good chance of having the right genes for the job.
Nepotism and having personal connections also goes a long way. Lance Stroll wouldn't be an F1 pilot if his dad didn't own the Aston Martin racing team.

Baseball is no better. Some of these "academies" cost $30k+/ year and will only take your kid if you can start them early so they're guaranteed a decade of tuition. If you say that you just want them to learn the basics, they get offended. Like if they're some ancient Kung-Fu masters and you're mocking the mystery of their "art."
I was thinking more opportunity and physical health costs for the child.
But you're right, wherever retards congregate someone will inevitably fleece them of their money too, that includes wannabe hall of famer parents.
This gets even more absurd when you realize that mastering the basics of a martial art is pretty much a lifelong endeavor and will carry you further than anything fancy.
