If you have the time check out Nightmare Cafe. Show came out in 91 and as a kid I loved it but it only lasted 6 episodes. About a man and a woman who die and find themselves in an all night cafe run by a guy named Blackie played by Robert Englund and people who recently died or are around death go there for a possible second chance. All 6 episodes are on YouTube. Show always has had a special place for me for some reason. Check it out if you have time

Thanks. I hate that "Tales From the Crypt" isn't available to stream. Not to sound naive but how complicated are music rights? I have a soft spot for anthology shows
Is that the reason it’s not on Max? That sux. I’m currently going through it on YouTube. Has a lot of episodes out of order. I remember for years Moonlighting wasn’t airing due to music rights issues but now it’s on. Great show.
You ever read any of the Tales from the Crypt comics? I have a bunch of reprints but would love to get an actual issue from the 50s.
I've never been a comic book guy.
I’ve read some cool anthologies kind of like it you may enjoy
You’ll never know the joy of looking down at people at the comic book store who don’t have the same knowledge about 1st appearances as you lol.
I’m joking of course.
Stremio plus debrid/torrentio begs to differ
If you want some anthologies to watch Monsters, 80s TZ, 02TZ, Hitchhiker, and 80s Alfred Hitchcock are on YouTube also original and late 90s Outer Limits. I think you may like the 50s anthology one step beyond
sounds a little like the series finale of quantum leap.
Never thought of that but a bit. Speaking of the Quantum Leap series finale, did you think that bartender was God too?
only saw it once, but it's possible. certainly there were overtones in that direction, or towards it being st peter/some other psychopomp...
Not the original commenter, but I don't. He actually tells Sam "God bless..." as Sam leaps out. It's my belief that the bartender is intended to be either one of the higher angels or one of the archangels.
Could be. I’ve always wondered about that episode. The guy who plays the bartender is also in the very first episode
There's two explanations for that episode. 1) God sends a messenger to Sam, who is in a non-time non-place (there are purposeful anachronisms in the entire episode) used to get Stawpah to "move on" and Sam to help Al, or 2) Sam somehow doesn't leap and he is actually going crazy, which is implied by Al, because he's literally at the moment of his birth in a place that can't be identified.
I’ve been waiting years for someone to breakdown that episode with me. I missed the God bless part so when I first saw it and the bartender knew all about his leaping I immediately assumed God, but an archangel makes sense. Considering he is in the first episode that adds credence. I still don’t like that he never went home but as a good friend he saved Al’s marriage
Well, remember, Archangel!Al (the bartender) and Sam use the comparison of a priest. Sam points out that priests can retire, A!Al rebuts with the fact that they can only do that once by renouncing the calling... but they can take sabbaticals. And a lot of missionaries historically died in the field.
I need to rewatch the finale. Haven’t seen it in years but remember even as an early teen I found their conversation to be profound
Fandom link and IMDB link.
"Mirror Image" from Quantum Leap and "Genesis" from Have Gun, Will Travel are two of the best recaps of a series episodes out there. And "Mirror Image" really should have been at the head of a full season of eipsodes, like "Genesis" was.
Thanks!
That was a weird show. I saw all six episodes when they came out.
Used to love that show -- they used to have a bunch of weird and unique shows back in the 80s and 90s, like The Hitchhiker (not to be confused with the Rutger Hauer movie), Tales from the Darkside, or Monsters.
Whoa, I have not heard about Tales from the Dark side for a very long time. Now I want to find it.
I believe they are on Prime
Had such a scary intro. To a kid at least
Back in the day, the movies weren't afraid to scare children.
Not at all. I remember I snuck out of my room after bedtime when I was like 8 and watched Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Stayed up all night with the lights on
To this very day "The Secret of NIMH" makes me uncomfortable. At least Killer Klowns is a horror movie.
I’m really surprised it got cancelled so quickly. As a kid the Tales from the Darkside opening scared me
I have to be completely honest -- I genuinely no longer remember what the intro was like. I have not seen that show in decades. Your post reminded me of it, though.
I was also recently thinking about Monsters, but I can't remember a darn thing about it.
Nightmare Cafe? I definitely remember the diner setting and the doorway portal, but not much else.
Opened with “don’t touch that remote or you’ll die”. I’m actually going through Monsters as well. Haven’t seen it in years. Still trying to find the actors that played the family in the opening
