Russia likes absorbing it's neighbors. Ask Poland.
Poland was an actual state. Ukraine never was. And of course, Poland was partitioned by three countries, only one of which was Russia.
Most of those countries have ethnic groups that founded their nations. The Ukranians are Kyievan Rus
Kievan Rus was founded by Vikings, who in any case first founded Novgorod, which is in Russia. 'Ukrainians' are certainly not Kievan Rus. In fact, the heart of the supposed Ukrainian nation is the parts of the land that were ethnically cleansed of Poles after WW2. It's totally fake.
Baltics, who are not Slavs, let alone Fins who are not even Indo-European, are very different from Russians ethnically and linguistically. Also, they have some record of independent existence after WW1, which so called Ukraine doesn't.
Claiming that Ukraine is a country is more like claiming that Archangelsk or Novosibirsk is a country. Or CHAZ in Seattle.
Nonsense, it's more like claiming Wales is a country. The Welsh are Anglo-Celt, rather than Anglo-Saxon, and haven't been independent for, what, 800 years?
The Welsh are Celts. Angles are Germanic, so not Anglo-Celt. Those two are very far apart. Less far than Russia-Finland but more than Lithuania-Russia (Balto-Slavic is one group).

That argument would also re-iterate that Latvia, Estonia, and Finland aren't real states either. They are, because their people established them.
