Doesn't look real to me. Look at any map in 1990. Do you see any state called 'Ukraine' there? Those lands were just Russia, same as they had been for 200 years, and the people have always been called 'Little Russians'.
Russia likes absorbing it's neighbors. Ask Poland. Most of those countries have ethnic groups that founded their nations. The Ukranians are Kyievan Rus that, in many cases, have lived outside the control of Russia; whether it's the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, or portions of the Ottoman Empire, or Austro-Hungarian Empire.
