I was pretty much sitting around 3.2 most of my highschool experience, maybe i would have actually done something with my life if I actually had tried. I never studied and I always did homework last second. Some weird ass reason I always had kids asking me for help or trying to copy my work.
I remember very vividly this guy slapping me on the back my freshman year and thanking me because he copied my answers for his 8th grade proficiency test. I was flabbergasted lmao.
It's mostly just for class standing - who's valedictorian and what not. Transcripts are still sent to colleges, not that it matters nowadays as shown in countless college rejection videos starring brilliant white kids.

Advanced courses gain an extra point so that someone with a B in AP Calculus 2 isn't outscored by someone with an A in remedial algebra.
So someone with a B in normal algebra gets outscored by someone with an A in arithmetic (or an extra gym class instead of study hall).
