Because they aren't trying to kill themselves 90% of the time. They are just attempting to gain something and the attempt can barely qualify as trying, if at all.
Women want to leave a beautiful, dramatic corpse. Which means they won't tarnish themselves with gruesome methods. Pills, little wrist slices, nitrogen, etc. Methods that barely work if you do them right and are extremely slow (giving maximum time to get rescued).
Whereas men just jump off a bridge, shoot themselves or throw toasters in a bathtub. Things that are quick, violent, ugly, and often very effective.
Even treating what women do as suicide attempts is just enabling their attention seeking behavior. Its unfortunate that we even give it seriousness instead of laughing at them for being so pathetic.

By even calling it "killing themselves" still plays into their framework that its a genuine attempt, rather than attention seeking wearing a grotesque skin suit.
