Exactly. Getting from the actual characters to the meaning is ridiculous.
You got wrong translation because you copied 所 into two separate characters 戶 and斤 also you can't just translate character by character, they have different meaning in context of combination with other characters
"relative therefore catty to hear, beats at pass to hear" - ah, it's so clear now.
You know what happens when you translate Latin by roots/affixes? It's kind of crude, but it basically makes sense.
The language is objectively trash, but I'm not really complaining. It's been holding China back for centuries, still today to a lesser extent, and that benefits me.
