They are a tool for killing and they are protected by our constitution. The threat of being killed stops bad actors (sometimes actually killing the bad actor), hunting is killing (so is eating meat, but that doesn't make it murder) and some day they may be needed to free us from oppression. They are not evil, but can be used in an evil way. Most of the time they are used in a responsible way.
I'd much rather kids keep considering them as tools to kill. That's the proper respect such a power deserves, and if that scares you too much then you shouldn't use one.
Treating them any lighter is how you misuse them and hurt people.
Hunting and Protection are both actions that involve killing, even if that killing is justified its still death. I got my first gun at like 8-9. It was handed to me as a device for removing pests and the weight of killing my first bird still hung over me for a long time.
The school shooting issue isn't about guns and it never has been, that's just the flavor. Columbine was meant to be a mass bombing that they just fucked up the making of, so they went with the backup. If we removed the guns we might remove the death toll, simply by removing the ease with which it can happen, but the underlying issues will remain.
Maybe one day, with enough purging of the establishment, kids can practice firearms to demystify them as 'evil tool designed to kill'.

I don't know as America USED to have gun clubs at school since guns were kept by students and they were seen as both hunting tools and protection.
We didn't have school shootings back then too.
