Unpopular opinion, but I was not a fan of either of the two modern Doom games. The first one became very monotonous, very quickly since every encounter was exactly the same. The second game with its annoying ammo mechanic just made it awkward to play, not to mention all the stupid jumping and swinging around. I actually have zero hype for the next game because of it
Loved Doom 2016, hated Eternal. Dark Ages looks like another big shake up, so I’ll be there. Id software are the only fuckers who know how to optimize a video game anymore.
2016 hit the sweet spot for me. It delivered the power fantasy experience that I crave in a first person shooter and was enough of a throwback to the days of playing Heretic back in the 90s.
Doom Eternal though? Yeah, fuck all of that. I uninstalled once I clipped through the floor. I don't want a puzzle shooter and I don't want the Doom Marine to have lore beyond "they killed my bunny so now I am going to murder all of Hell".
Agree, I like the idea of the games more than the games themselves. I think they are quite good, just not for me. The first modern Doom was repetitive and not very challenging.
I don't think it's unpopular, and I wholeheartedly agree with you. In fact, I think it's an opinion that is spot on for people who actually used to play FPS games in the 1990s.
My biggest gripe with Doom 2016 were the levels. They lacked the horror vibes of the original Doom trilogy. That was something that really set Doom apart from other power-fantasy FPS games in the 90s like Blake Stone, Chex Quest or Rise of the Triad. Corridor 7 also tried going the horror route and had some cool guns but was poorly designed.
I think Doom 2016 would have been right up my alley if there were fewer arena survival-segments, which is what made it feel so monotonous. More horror-themed levels would have really shaken things up so it felt less repetitive. And as others said, I had ZERO interest in the ADHD autism-driven Doom Eternal. It was just too much.
I love the heavy momentum and feel that they seem to be going for with Doom Dark Ages but I don't like the shield all that much, and I really hate him using one hand for two-handed weapons. It really takes away from it. If you get the choice of not using the shield so you can properly use both hands on the weapons then I might consider getting it.
But good on them for at least having a well-optimised engine that looks good, runs at 60 smooth fps, and doesn't have to rely on fake frames to reach the 60fps margin, unlike UE4/UE5.

Yeah I'm glad it exists but I have no interest in that type of gameplay. To each their own though.
