No idea about the middle east (you would know more about that, no?) but the genetics component is underrated. Demographics is destiny. Goblinas and sheboons and assorted muttoids with fat asses drive our average up. I also assume seed oils are big factor.
Like it says back at the start of this chain, don't underrate the genetic component. Just because a rice-heavy diet works for East Asians doesn't mean it'll work for you. And they do have a fair amount of quality meat and veggies with that rice, they aren't just gorging on carbs all the time.

Sugar is bad, but grains and carbs are the real enemies. Do the opposite of what the food pyramid tells you to do.
And rice is what again? Interestingly, looks like all the lowest obesity countries have rice as a staple in their diet.
