In 2018, academics published a study on the use of archive links in pol and T_D. They claimed it was an abuse of archiving services. Warning: gross neckbeard image at the top. (archive.ph)

They're trying to push the concept of archiving as piracy because that would allow big conglomerates to control all of the information. He who controls information controls the world.

Journalists need to be bullied even more.

Bullied, sure, that's the term we'll go with. That offers plausible deniability.

"They're archiving and we don't like that"

Gentlemen, the mid level boss just screamed out it's own weakness. I'm not sure if this is a ruse or not, but we should at least see if this strategy works.

"We quietly delete and modify historical records, how to we stop people from being able to prove it?"

Direct link to this press piece is here.

Link to the study. It seems this wasn't published in an academic journal, but at something call the "International Conference on Web and Social Media." Perhaps this wasn't a terribly impactful finding.

this, among many other reasons, is why we archive

Additional evidence shows moderators from specific subreddits force users to misuse web archiving services so as to ideologically target certain news sources by depriving them of traffic and potential ad revenues.

We found the real problem buried in the middle.

They are mad people aren't giving them money for clickbait nonsense and instead found a way to "adblock" full on articles while still taking the information and discussing it.

Its removed the requirement to pay the middlemen even if you remain opposed to them and thereby completely made redundant both the news media and their carefully crafted marketing strategy.

Probably depends on how far up the chain you go which is the more pressing issue.

Also the lack of engagement means lack of appearances through things like algorithms, meaning depriving them of the money has the addon effect of "spreading that truth."
