It's funny as in real life, bronies were basically the first pic and they were actually chill guys but because they liked an animated show for kids, they're 'creeps'.
Meanwhile the mainstream media will run defence for the fetish wearing freaks wanting to be near kids alone..
Considering the sheer level of pony porn being created in spaces that were near adjacent to a children's show meant for little children, I don't think they get to pull the "chill guy" card.
Some were for sure unfairly maligned just for liking a kid's show, but there reputation for being creeps became pretty self-fulfilling pretty fast with how their "fandom" evolved. And not "a few extreme wierdos" problem, but seemingly an overwhelming majority of them were either for it or tolerant of it.
Bronies transcended this level and were far beyond any other simple "rule 34 space."
They were creating pony porn right next to regular pony art that was in official channels, flooding Youtube with so much questionable material that children would be watching, and had the actual ear of the company itself working to their whims. Shit they still have their own fucking board on 4chan that is one of the most active on the site, despite the show ending years ago.
Its why they not only have a name onto themselves, whereas most porny fandoms do not, but its a well known one at that. Because they were special in many ways, and few of them were positive.

I was on the internet. This was pre-algorithm where things just existed alongside everything else. I know, shocking idea that there was a time when Google didn't control what you considered reality. I hung out on 4chan, where they were so bad they had to get banished from /b/. I played WoW where they were a menace that would ERP in any chat channel they could.
Also he dismissed them as "unrepresentative of the majority" so I responded by saying they how were visible and thereby the rest of his musings on "weird underground r34 culture" weren't relevant to them.

True, but most furries don't have a subculture onto themselves for specific properties that is massive enough that it changes industry standards and marketing.
Like as a whole they might, but they Zootopia fandom isn't literally shaping discourse and internet culture like bronies did.
The show ran for like 10 years. The people that started watching it as kids grew up and became adults with adult interests. And the show was still going.
To be fair, and speaking as a brony who looks back on the (early) show fondly, furries gonna furry. There were definitely untoward elements in the fandom. But that's true for every fandom in existence. It's literally a rule of the internet. And it's directly proportional to the popularity of the media in question too. So ponies got popular, ponies suffered the consequences, male fans totally to blame. Go figure.
It's interesting. Media can pander directly to female pervs and nobody bats an eye. But male pervs make their own smut for media they're interested in and suddenly it's completely degenerate to like that thing. Once again, go figure.

When you say "basically the first pic", are you implying they sought to read to/entertain kids? Because they might be pretty chill but I'd still view any of them who sought access to a kid with great suspicion.
