I'm pretty sure that Reddit is just meant to make money, even if it doesn't. It probably did have the result you mention. Apparently, there are enough people who care about karma that accusations of 'karmafarming' are a thing.

Reddits NET income 12 months running is like NEGATIVE -$500M. Reddit has never had a money making business model. And it has no business being a publicly traded company.
