It's like asking a physicist to give you a definition of mass without being reductive. "The amount of stuff in a thing" is so loosely explained it basically just has to be taken on faith. Cultural distinctiveness/uniqueness (aka: "National Character")
Agreed upon shared history
Within this, a "Nation" is among a higherarchy of other demographic identities ranging from the most explicitly defined (kin group) to the most abstractly defined (Ideology or Major Religion)
