I was a bit surprised by the huge swathe of Russians that showed up at the turn of the 20th century. I don't feel like I see much ethnic Rus presence in the US, so I wonder if they were listed as Russian because some of those countries only just began to exist (or re-emerge). It would make sense that Polish immigration would be zero while Poland wasn't a country, only for it to become one, and then Russian and Polish immigration swap.
not really that surprising when you consider lenin was trying to overthrow the Czar at the time (and later succeeded). Anyone not onboard with the plan, or who just wanted to avoid the conflict probably Noped the fuck outta there. I don't doubt other nations saw massive numbers of Russia immigrants at the same time...
That's a good point, I didn't think about that. There would have been a flood of refugees from mass starvation as well.
War is an ugly thing that should be avoided whenever (reasonably) possible...
War against the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Communists, and Socialists is always an abject moral good. The issue is whether the cost of that moral good outweighs the benefits to your own people to wage that war.
Maybe they are all in their former colony of Alaska?
There are random blocks of Eastern Europeans scattered about. They tend to keep to themselves.
Not just in Alaska, I know of least two st petersburgs in the lower 48 (one in florida, the other in Iowa).
That's probably it. Official documents would have your country of origin as Russian and not yoyr ethnicity.
