It's an interesting subject because there are more people who celebrate their Irish heritage outside of Ireland than in it. Even more interesting is how many traditions have been brought back to Ireland or changed because of that. The pumpkin instead of the turnip. The constant references to to Samhein, which follows Irish traditions and doesn't get pronounced like it's spelled, or Halloween. St Patrick's day wasn't much of anything until the American Celebrations went over the top.

The same happens for my native Germany. I recently found out Oktoberfest is Bavarian, which explains why I never remember celebrating it. If you want a German holiday, celebrate Christmas. I still don't know how we get candles in trees safely. The only thing celebrated by Argentines is the fact that we're better than everyone else at football.

It's sort of what I studied and taught about as an academic. Fascinating, but too many people wanted me to choose a loser and winner.

That's because there are more Irish descendants outside of Ireland now than there are the native population back in the country.

Because the ones that left didn't continue to suffer a famine, nor then go through a local civil war for decades, both of which suppressed population growth. All the while the ones who left bred like rabbits.
