Godot Engine goes HARD on woke, (almost) literally rebrands to "Wokot" #Wokot 🌈 (nitter.poast.org)

I'm fucking pissed.

Also retreeted this, which is why I said they almost literally rebranded. And that's the project manager, so you really can't get any closer to a literal rebranding without them actually changing the project name.

Fuck these assholes. Absolutely fuck them. Forever.

They're also, predictably, blocking fucking everyone, then cheering on that everyone agrees with them.

I'm so sick of it all. I really, really, really am.

This was an open source project, just doing its own thing. I cannot state my frustration here.

Is it realistically possible for an open source project to gatekeep?

Well yes, that's what the pm of Godot is successfully doing isn't it? We can make a non-woke fork, but the original Godot is forever tainted because the owners do whatever they want to do and silence all dissent.

Although it's arguable whether whoever let this goblin manage the project in the first place failed to gatekeep or knew exactly what he was doing. That's not a specifically open source problem.

I've argued no. And oh boy did that activate some almonds.

Even from a libertarian perspective, I can't argue that the long history of Open Source, Open Internet, etc was always a LEFT Libertarian sentiment regarding property. I think it still spurred enormous growth and utility, but without typical property boundaries, you can't gate-keep bad actors from intentionally infiltrating a system, and then intentionally sabotaging it as an institution. The only solution in that manner is to build faster than it can be subverted, which is not an easy task.

Sure - gatekeeping means keeping them out of the chain of command. Being open source means they could create their own parallel command structure by forking the project, but it doesn't compel you to invite them into yours.

Not to mention, wasn't this one of the only viable game development engines outside of Unity & Unreal?

Yeah. They'd built up a ton of goodwill as everyone bailed from Unity, and thought Godot was pretty cool.

There is Unigine, but it's still a long ways off from having the same kind of support and ease-of-use with its libraries like Unity, Unreal and Godot.

Any good resources on Unigine? I might try my hand at it over the next year if it's worth it.

Sadly, not really. Not many content creators/sites seem to have a robust set of tutorial libraries to help get devs started the way Unreal/Unity/Godot do.

However, if you were already partially familiar with Unity or Unreal there are some exporters/importers available to help ease you into the process, at least asset wise: https://youtu.be/EaQpDYQqr8o

Viability for more serious projects is questionable. There's lots of hype, but have any/many larger games shipped with it?

And the console support situation isn't ideal.

I've been reading it as gaw dough. Should I have been reading it Go Dot? Wikipedia says it's named after the play, which is "gaw dough," so should I read their hashtag as Wah Koh? Even the pun is stupid.

It's a little unclear, and has become a bit of a meme. I think it was originally meant to be Go-Dot, but no one really liked it and started pronouncing it the other way. Don't quote me on that though. But, yeah, "Wokot" doesn't even seem like it could fit to how most people seemingly pronounce the platform, so it's another weird divide right there.

Wokot doesn't even make sense, I agree.
