Laissez-faire freedom of the media was a mistake. It's a nice idea. Maybe it could work in small populations. Most nations understand you need speech rules and censorship to direct the proper upbringing of future generations. I'm not sure what the best system for America would have been. At least something that gives local communities control over cultural propaganda. A lot of local channels would preempt network TV more often before consolidation.
Separating content generation from distribution might have been the correct course. That way regional regulators would have a say over the distributors in their local spheres, minimizing the degeneracy that was available in at least some areas.
