Game scores are subjective and don't mean anything.
Scores from journalists don't mean anything. Scores on a personal scale are accurate measures of their enjoyment of a product. Subjective doesn't mean useless, only biased to an individual's preference.
Individual preference is just as biased as that of journalists. In both cases, you're relying on someone's impression that is not your own.
Journos reviews/scores are unreliable because of financial or political incentive & game journos nowadays don't even like games.
As long as you are aware of a bias- especially if it aligns with yours- you will still be better informed than going in blind. If a friend or trusted reviewer says they like/dislike a game, a scale is useful for quantifying how much.
It doesn't need to be a perfect system to be useful.
