In a way, but with how the Chinese audience has shown themselves to be they will just buy anything made by their own country or adapts the only 2-3 stories they've ever written.
Since its a game made by them for them, I'm happy for them. But that's not indicative of quality or worth for anyone but them either.
I know nothing about the game itself other than it exists, it being good or bad is irrelevant to the fact that being a AAA Chinese made game using a popular Chinese story means it having millions of concurrent players isn't a comparable metric.
Its about context and relativity to keep things in proportion.
It's pretty embarrassing how this gets touted as some kind of anti-woke success
Well, the story goes that Sweet Baby tried extorting the devs to the tune of $7 million. "It'd be a shame if your game got shitty reviews due to lack of diversity wouldn't it?", and they got told to pound sand.
sure bro, just ignore the fact that they refused to pay sweet baby 7 million for “consulting fees” and than had to endure made up hit piece after hit piece trying to cancel the devs. take out the chinese audience and you still have an incredibly successful game. it’s a success by every measure and the woke faggots tried to cancel this game and failed miserably
Refusing extortion rackets doesn't just magically give you millions upon millions of players. If it did DARQ wouldn't be a niche game you've never heard of and Hogwarts Legacy (a game with an existing massive IP behind it compared to this brand new one) would have tripled its player count.
I'm happy for their success, and hopefully its a good game as I generally end up playing all soulslike or action games eventually when their price drops, but you need to, as you said, take the Chinese audience out to actually compare its success in context.
than take out the chinese audience in every game as well, let’s say for the sake of arguement 80 percent of the players are chinese, 20 percent of 2.5 million is still 500,000 players still a huge success and their attempts at canceling the devs after they refused sweet baby’s consulting failed
Its a AAA game made in China, about the story that the Chinese love like crack, and has actual marketing behind it.
Its success isn't really indicative of anything other than there are a lot of Chinese people.
Also understanding the audience

Good point
it’s still a very good game at its core, not sure why you are trying to downplay its success

That its audience is Chinese?
That and not attacking the fans who play video games
"good for them" I say
I second that. Just speaking that its absurd numbers isn't really that telling.
The same way Transformers movies making a billion dollars doesn't, because the Chinese will buy any loud American action movie too.
Quick. Make the MC a black lesbian. Then they can get the Chinese market and grow their audience /s
