Refusing extortion rackets doesn't just magically give you millions upon millions of players. If it did DARQ wouldn't be a niche game you've never heard of and Hogwarts Legacy (a game with an existing massive IP behind it compared to this brand new one) would have tripled its player count.
I'm happy for their success, and hopefully its a good game as I generally end up playing all soulslike or action games eventually when their price drops, but you need to, as you said, take the Chinese audience out to actually compare its success in context.
than take out the chinese audience in every game as well, let’s say for the sake of arguement 80 percent of the players are chinese, 20 percent of 2.5 million is still 500,000 players still a huge success and their attempts at canceling the devs after they refused sweet baby’s consulting failed
