Basically, the article devolves into complete gibberish in the second half:
Balancing science and research equally with te ao Māori was important for DOC, he said.
Te Rūnanga ō Ōtākou had been engaged since the whale sighting was reported, and the hapū wanted to help support further research, while seeing that matauranga Māori was upheld, Davies said.
"Something that is quite commonly requested because of the significance of whales within te ao Māori, specifically the jaw bone is quite a common request."
It was hoped a hui would be held with all the various interested parties to decide on the next steps in the coming weeks, he said.
DOC had been working in partnership with Te Rūnanga ō Ōtākou from the outset on making a plan for the whale's remains.
"It is important to ensure appropriate respect for this taoka is shown through the shared journey of learning, applying mātauraka Māori as we discover more about this rare species," Te Rūnanga ō Ōtakou chair Nadia Wesley-Smith said.
The whale had been carefully removed from the beach by local contractor Trevor King Earthmoving, local rūnaka members and Otago Museum.
It was now being preserved in cold storage until the next steps were decided.
Tell me about the Abos and rare sea turtles. We're currently discussing an arms deal to Turtleandia in exchange for full mining rights to an immense deposit of undersea pitchblende but it feels rude to ask the victims what happened to them.
Similarly, the Australian oceanic research vessel has recently been studying deep ocean canyons off the east coast (we’re talking dozens of kilometers off shore, here) and they have, onboard, an Aboriginal adviser, because they (utterly anachronistically) claim it as their “water country”, and it’s important she sees all the deep water creatures, so they know how to “protect country and cultural knowledge better”, apparently…
Which is truly an impressive gift.
Meanwhile the state leader where I am just announced increased funding for childcare surrounded by children playing on top of an “Indigenous designed play mat”, next to a doll’s house draped in the Abo flag, with not a single Aussie flag in sight…
The Aboriginals long since went the way of the dinosaurs. They're now a cultural pet project, kept solely alive through the beneficence of their Western benefactors. Once that support evaporates, the remaining 'Aboriginals' would disintegrate into nothing.
This is actually an example of 'post-modernism' at work. These 'Maori' only have the cultural status that they do because of Western fetishization of the 'Maori' cultural project.
In a 'traditional' Western world, those Maori would have already been assimilated, which they have been, but not in the form that would have been the case.

New Zealanders really have a love of this maori stuff.
Bordering on a destructive self-hatred of whites.
Bordering on?
Straight up IS
And, I'm taking it, they kill the whale instead of getting it back in the water, like White people?
Sucks when your tiny canoes aren't big enough to get your own whales, I guess.
Nah, this whale is definitely already dead. I believe it was dead when it washed ashore.
But in general yes, your point stands.
You don’t even want to know about the Abos and rare sea turtles… shivers

Well I suppose they did perform well as Uruk-Hai. In LotR of course...

I hate what this country has become.

...but enough about The View...
I can't criticise the Maori response... because I have no fucking clue what they're asking for.
Scientists want to study it but local maori activists want to chop it up and make jewellery out if its bones.
With they way Universities are now I would rather it went to the maoris.
REJECT MODERNITY
EMBRACE TRADITION
Nice try.
