Hollywood ran out of ideas YEARS ago, you only get lucky with a few remakes or new adaptations where the original take didn't have the tech needed to showcase it at the time.
But for the rest, it's sequels baby, even when it ended on the best note (Gladiator, Toy Story 3)
The director cut out some very important footage after the credit roll.
The real ending for the first movie had Maximus return to his wife and son when they said "Your time has not yet come" then they brought him back to life. Then Denzel Washington walked out of the stands and said "I am your emperor now" and the crowd shouted "We support you because we're not racist like Blonadus Trumpicus!" Then Senator Gracchus said "I identify as a woman" and the crowd applauded wildly as they threw their soy latte gourds onto the field. Lucilla was offended by this because she is supposed to be the strong female character.
I don't think so. The narrator of the trailer is supposed to be the adult version of the kid in the 1st Gladitor. So while it has new characters it also continues the story from the first movie.
It's always easier to destroy something than to build it on your own.
Sequels are perfect for that. Take the name, remove the innards and wear its skin. And then blame the fans for being sexist/racist/whateverist so you get good media coverage and a reason for it flopping.

With the way Gladiator ended how in the heck does it get a sequel?!

And that sets up the plot for the sequel.
Ha! I was actually believing that until Trumpicus. Sadly I could see that
Different characters in a similar situation?

Oh. Ok
