Again, trustworthy longtime members only, or more mods will only make things even worse. I've bitched about current moderation repeatedly, but I'd still rather take inconsistent and often no moderation over overactive moderation any day of the week. In fact, on most issues I still want even less moderation than we currently have.
It would basically just be nice to stamp out obvious trolls. That's it. That's all mods need to do.
I think it goes beyond that, "respectful". It still feels too easy for even some longtime members, who'd step up to take the position, to fall into the trap of shutting down things they don't like. The rules can be abused in different ways depending on the mindset of the mod. The current arrangement is an annoying stalemate.
That's kind of what I meant by trustworthy; someone who can be trusted not to go on a crusade for their own personal biases. Someone who can be trusted not to abuse their power. Someone who can be trusted to actually respect free speech.
Do we really need a narcissist with a gun and anger management issues? Downvoting should suffice. I'd institute an auto-collapse feature over a specific threshold like what was used on slashdot, but it could be easily abused by soapbox and whatnot.
More importantly, the fucking jannoid is asleep at the wheel as always.
We need additional mods. Basic redundancy for this exact sort of situation.
